Lot # 1087: 1947 Joe Tinker Signed Letter in Framed Display - Full JSA LOA

Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Tinker proved prophetic when he sent this July 31, 1947 typed letter signed. While residing in Orlando, Tinker corresponded with Sgt. John D. Wagner, of Pennsylvania.

In the fascinating content, Tinker mentions being in the real estate business. He also talks about it being too hot for his new limb, a prosthetic for his left leg, which was amputated above the knee in 1947 due to diabetes. Tinker then gives his answer to who he thinks will win the 1947 NL pennant, naming the Brooklyn Dodgers, along with the quote “and naturally it will be a 5¢ World Series”. The Dodgers went on to face the Yankees in New York City, where the cost of a subway ride was exactly a nickel. Tinker concludes with a statement regarding the local Orlando Senators, with the response “Baseball is just fair here, our team is struggling along in fourth place”. A check of the 1947 Class D Florida State League standings reveals the Orlando squad finished in 4th place, about a month after Tinker sent this letter.

Tinker passed away due to complications from diabetes almost a year to the day of this correspondence, on July 27, 1948, which was his 68th birthday. Typed on Richard M. Stewart, III Registered Real Estate Broker letterhead, this letter is visible in a 5” x 8-1/2” window, set in an 11” x 23” frame. Tinker’s signature remains readily discernible, despite being somewhat faded. Joined with the letter in this display piece, is a Perez-Steele postcard with an illustration of 2X World Series champion Tinker.
