Description

Over several decades, Mr. Oliver Compton of Bridgewater, New Jersey sent letters to multiple Major League players asking them to relate their most thrilling experience in baseball. This is just one of the many offered in this auction. Meticulously collected over many decades, the letters average Excellent condition or better.

 

This 8 ½ x 11 letter (VG) from Waite Hoyt is on “Scripps Howard Radio Inc. stationery dated April 8th, 1948. The pitcher relates the story of his first full big-league game that he pitched for the Boston Red Sox in late July 1990, stating that a fight occurred under the grandstand between Ty Cobb and umpire George Moriarty. It must be noted that this was an ongoing feud between the two, and that this is the only mention of a fight on this date, but several other altercations were recorded.

It is signed “Waite C. Hoyt" in black fountain pen (“9-10”).
