Description

Over several decades, Mr. Oliver Compton of Bridgewater, New Jersey sent letters to multiple Major League players asking them to relate their most thrilling experience in baseball. This is just one of the many offered in this auction. Meticulously collected, the letters average Excellent condition or better.

Offered are (2) related 2-page letters:

Bob O’Farrell signed 2-page handwritten letter on 8 ½ x 9 blank stationery dated Dec. 14, 1979. The catcher writes, “About the 1926 World Series, that was my greatest thrill in baseball also especially the last play of the game when I threw Babe Ruth out attempting to steal second base. I should say the last play of the series...”

Signed “Sincerely - Bob O'Farrell – P.S. Happy Holidays” (“9-10”) in blue ballpoint.

 

Bob O’Farrell signed 2-page handwritten letter on 8 ½ x 9 blank stationery dated July 1, 1980. This letter is full of great detail about the famous 1926 World Series where Grover Cleveland Alexander came in to save the game in the last two innings for the St. Louis Cardinals. The catcher writes, “The next time I saw Babe, I asked him why he tried to steal. He said he thought Alex wasn't watching close enuf and he didn't think the Yanks could get two hits in a row off Alex and wanted to get to 2nd base to score on a single.”
