Lot # 1256: 1950s Gibbs-Conner Cincinnati Reds Mr. Redlegs 25-Inch Promotional Porcelain Statue - Exceptionally Rare

Supersize your sports figure collection with this 1950s Gibbs-Conner Cincinnati Reds Mr. Redlegs mascot statue. Standing 25” tall, this massive porcelain figure has a base footprint of 8” x 8”. The depiction is an old school mascot attired in an antique uniform type, topped off with a pillbox cap. Seen on the bat is a Gibbs-Conner “GC” logo, where a factory labeling brand would typically be located.

Close examination reveals minor factory firing flaws of an unobtrusive nature, including a barely perceptible surface groove impression on top of the base. Consistent with the handful of examples we have examined over the years, this condition seems to be a regular occurrence with this giant-size statue type. The wet-look glaze and colors are strong and wear is minimal, with the only minor detraction being a hairline crack on the front of the base at center, which extends 1” up onto the top of the base, terminating at the point where it meets the groove impression.

Given this fragile, visually commanding colossus is approximately 75 years old, it stands as a model of preservation, testifying to the care of any previous owners. Intended for point-of-sale promotion of Gibbs-Conner’s standard size banks and toothpick holders, 25” statues such as this have survived in very small numbers. We have only ever discovered just one or two examples for any given team, so you can safely regard this oversized icon as being exceptionally rare.
