This 7x9 News Service photo depicts a truly wholesome, old-fashioned gathering as Lou Gehrig presents a young lad with his World’s Fair “Academy of Sport” Student Card. They are surrounded by other awestruck boys, including one in a Boy Scout uniform. Two of Gehrig's teammates, Bill Dickey and Atley Donald, are looking on. The New York World's Fair was celebrating “Lou Gehrig Day” as Lou had just retired and announced his illness. The photo is accompanied by a 2 ¾ x 4 membership card, graded GD-VG, possibly the very one in the photo. It is made out to Eden Bitzer and the line for “The Instructor of the Day” is neatly signed “Lou Gehrig” by his wife, Eleanor. Excellent condition.
Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
