Hall of Fame hurler “Lefty” Grove makes a cordial appearance, with this circa 1930s photograph, taken by George Burke. Grove’s flashing a big smile in this classic portrait, and you’d be smiling too, if you had his talent. Burke was the leading baseball photographer of the day, and this 8x10 matte print reflects his masterful talent. Grove was equally impressive at his craft, leading the league in every important pitching category during his prime. His best stretch came in 1929-1931, when he helped the Philadelphia Athletics to two World Series championships, and three consecutive AL pennants. Remarkably, he was tops in the Majors in both wins and saves in 1930, pulling double duty for Connie Mack in a championship season. While the reverse side of this ancient photograph is coated with adhesive and paper residue, the obverse remains highly appealing, showing EX+ details.
