Description

The New York Giants were just one season away from establishing one of baseball’s great dynasties, when this 1920 John McGraw Type I news service photograph was taken. From 1921-1924, the Giants won four consecutive National League pennants, and they also won back-to back World Series championships in 1921-1922. McGraw was the authoritarian director of this historic run, padding his already impressive resume, as one of baseball’s elite managers. “Mugsy” looms large and in charge in this shot, which must have been captured during spring training, as the reverse is dated 3/18/20. Also seen on the reverse are a credit stamp for the New York Herald Syndicate, and an underlined stamp of the name “John J. McGraw”. A 1” diagonal tear above the bottom-left corner and a pinhole at top-right, dictate a (FR) grade, however these conditions are fairly unobtrusive, and this 7" x 9-3/4" photograph is otherwise appealing.
