While there are at least a few pictures of John McGraw actually smiling, this isn’t one of them. We’d say it’s more like a look of confidence McGraw is showing, in this circa 1910s Type I news service photograph. Sized at 4-1/2” x 6-1/4”, this borderless portrait photo rates as (GD), with deference to pinholes at the upper corners. Most of the back is covered by adhered album paper with later date identifications and stampings, though portions of earlier notations peak out from the applied paper. Under McGraw’s strict direction, the New York Giants won four NL pennants during the 1910s, cementing his reputation as one of the game’s very best managers. Despite a solid career batting average of .334, it was McGraw’s managerial skills that got him elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937.
