Lot # 1472: Extremely Rare 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers Three-Dimensional Pennant with Brooklyn Bum Mascot

An extremely rare souvenir is spotlighted, with the presentation of this 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers three-dimensional pennant. This astonishing full-size pennant is adorned with a mesmerizing Brooklyn Bum mascot appliqué. Applied in raised felt, this colorful figure is toting an actual wood half bat with a polka dot hobo sack tied to the barrel. The details are incredible, from the stuffed sack to the patches on his clothes, right down to the big toe sticking out from a hole in his left shoe. Lettering appears in three different fonts and two colors, with "Brooklyn Dodgers" in outlined and solid block white lettering, and "Dem Bums" in gold. The point is slightly clipped and there are pin holes on the securely attached tassels. The wood bat has been sawn down the middle lengthwise to fit through slits above and below the Bum's right hand. Similar slits are noted on his upraised left hand, indicating he once held another object, perhaps a pennant or a cigar stub. Diligent research found exactly five previously offered examples of this rare keepsake, and none of them pictured the Bum holding anything in his left hand, so the suspected object is shrouded in mystery. Given the deluxe composition of this vintage wonder, it likely cost a pretty penny when originally offered, limiting sales and therefore surviving examples.
