Lot # 1476: Vintage Briggs/Tiger Stadium Seat with Figural "Batting Tiger" End - Tough Example

Grab a tiger by the tail, when you track down this Briggs/Tiger Stadium seat. Obviously repainted at some point, this vintage seat has been fitted with heavy duty metal feet to enable freestanding display. The ladderback section has three slats and the smoothly functioning fold-up seat section has five slats, with age-appropriate wear curved into the front slat from many years of use. The feature that raises this relic to must have status for advanced collectors, is the left side iron armrest with batting tiger figure design. With bat raised for action, this fierce feline remains ready for action. The overall appearance of this 20” wide x 33” high seat is very appealing, with a sturdy feel to it, though the top back slat has a little play to it. The batting tiger armrest indicates this seat was located at the left end of a row, and the right side armrest is fitted with protruding hoops to enable connection to the next seat in the row.

Opened as Navin Field in 1912, the hallowed venue was renamed Briggs Stadium in 1938. A second name change to Tiger Stadium came in 1961, and after a press box fire in 1977, the original green wooden seats, such as the one offered here, were replaced by blue and orange plastic seats. American League pennants and World Series championships were won and lost while fans cheered passionately from this seat, including the 1968 Year of the Tiger season, which saw Denny McLain rack up 31 wins, as the last MLB pitcher to reach the 30-win mark. A few of the many other greats who played in front of this wizened seat, are Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Hal Newhouser and Al Kaline.
