Lot # 1098: Edward A. Guest (d.1955) Original Typewritten Signed "Connie Mack" Poem

Edward A. Guest, British born American poet who became known as the People's Poet, was so popular he had his own radio show and TV shows from 1931 through the 1950s, “A Guest in Your House. He was known for his optimistic view on life. This typewritten poem, on 6x8 stationery with evidence of album removal on the back, is entitled “Connie Mack.”

Since first a youngster on life's road,

My heart on baseball, I bestowed.

I've learned to watch with eyes of flame

The feats of manhood's finest game.

As far as mind can wander back,

I've known the name of Connie Mack.

That little boy, which once was I

Turned on him his admiring eye.

Thought him heroic as he stood

To serve the game's supreme good,

And even dared to dream that he,

Someday like him, might grow to be.

Across the sky of baseball's fame

Flash meteors of fire and flame

To leave in dusty books their feats

Which some newcomer soon repeats.

But few like Connie Mack survive

Still to be young at 75.
