Description

Fred Clarke was home on the range in Winfiled, Kansas, when he signed the check seen in this commanding matted display. Clarke (HOF, d.1960) retired to his ranch, after he hung it up as a longtime player-manager for first the Louisville Colonels from 1894-1899, and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1900-1915. Clarke's .312 career batting average and .576 managerial winning percentage testify that he was great at both playing and managing.

Dated Dec. 9, 1942, this First National Bank check is graced with a magnificent look of period authenticity. This antique check centers the 18" x 24" blue and grey double-matted display. Located above the check is a batting pose photograph of Clarke. Arrayed below the check are oversized replicas of Clarke's T205 and T206 tobacco cards, with a Perez-Steele postcard set between them. Clarke's signature on the check is a bold application, and the display presents handsomely.
