Bare-knuckle brawlers make the scene, with this 1889 National Police Gazette supplement featuring John L. Sullivan versus Jake Kilrain. Framed and double-matted to overall dimensions of 30-1/2" x 24-1/2", this manly illustration depicts the ancient art of boxing without gloves. The issue number for this antique supplement is printed at top as "Vol. LIV, No. 620", followed by the publication title "Supplement to the National Police Gazette, New York" and the date "July 17, 1889". The caption spanning the bottom border reads "John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain as they appeared in the ring. The two gladiators preparing for an opening in the first round of their historic fight at Richboro, Miss., on July 8, 1889". Despite multiple vetical folds of a moderate nature, this pastel presentation remains attractive, with period authentic appeal.
