Strongman James J. Jeffries looks the part, in this 1899 Hall Studios cabinet card. Credited to W.A. Brady, this antique photograph measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/2". Jeffries won the heavyweight title in 1898, by beating Tom Sharkey, and he retired as an undefeated champion in 1904, after defending his crown against the likes of James J. Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Bob Armstrong, and a rematch with Sharkey. In 1910 Jeffries came out of retirement to face Jack Johnson, as the "Great White Hope", in a sign of the times during the Jim Crow era. Six years removed from the ring, Jeffries had little chance of winning this heavyweight championship fight, and he was stopped by Johnson in the 15th round, for the only loss on his record. Along with the photography credits and the copyright date 1899, the bottom border is printed with the caption "Jim Jeffries, Champion of the World". SGC has graded this coveted cabinet card VG 3.
