Description

An ancient heavyweight champion is remembered, with this circa 1890s James J. Corbett cabinet card. Known as "Gentleman Jim", Corbett was the only boxer to beat John L. Sullivan, which earned him the heavyweight title in 1892. Sized at 4-1/4" x 6-1/2", this photograph was likely taken before Corbett became champion, as the title at bottom is his name only, with no announcement of his status. A scientific fighter who trained diligently, Corbett is seen here in a classic boxing pose. SGC has encapsulated this handsome card with an Authentic designation.
