Extraordinary pugilist Bob Fitzsimmons strikes a dynamic pose in this 1899 Klein & Guttenstein cabinet card #25. Boxing's first champion in three different weight divisions, Fitzsimmons is cited as the lightest heavyweight champion ever, at 167 pounds. Fitzsimmons won the middleweight title in 1891, and in 1897 he beat James J. Corbett to claim the heavyweight crown. After surrendering the heavyweight title to James J. Jeffries in 1899, Fitzsimmons furthered his legend by beating George Gardiner in 1903 to become light-heavyweight champion. Copyright dated 1899, this 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" photograph had to have been issued during the build-up to his first bout with Jeffries on June 9, 1899, as the caption at bottom bills him as "World's Champion Middle and Heavy Weight". SGC has encapsulated this antique cabinet card with an Authentic designation.
