Willie McCovey H&B block-letter model "S2" bat dating from the 1974 manufacturing period, during McCovey's tenure with the San Diego Padres. The LOA from PSA/DNA states: "After thorough examination of this Willie McCovey professional model bat and its player use characteristics, it is our opinion the bat is authentic, and was manufactured for McCovey during the referenced labeling period." McCovey has signed the bat in black ink (which has mostly faded) on the barrel. McCovey began his Major League career in 1959 with the Giants, and even though he appeared in only fifty-two games that year, his 13 home runs, 38 RBI, and .354 average earned him the Rookie of the Year Award. Over the course of the next twenty-one seasons McCovey was one of the game's greatest sluggers, and his total of 521 home runs ties him for twentieth on the all-time list with Ted Williams and Frank Thomas. Included among many individual achievements are three home-run titles (1963, 1968, and 1969) and one MVP Award (1969). McCovey was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 32.7 ounces. Full LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA (for the bat only, a corresponding sticker affixed to the barrel end). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA (for the signature only).
