Description

Rick Monday Hillerich & Bradsby signature-model bat ("S2") dating from the 1972 manufacturing period. Graded GU 10 by PSA/DNA. The bat displays evidence of excellent use, including ball marks (including black ink transfers) on the barrel, a light coat of pine tar on the middle of the handle, and red bat rack streaks. Monday's uniform number ("7") has been written on the knob and barrel end (faded) in black ink. Monday has signed the bat with the inscription "To Bob Best Always" on the barrel, but it has faded slightly. The manufacturing period of the bat dates from Monday's first season with the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Monday won the 1981 World Series with the Dodgers. It was prior to his tenure in Los Angeles, but coincidentally during a Cubs vs. Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium, that Monday made a play he is best remembered for today and what is commonly referred to as the greatest play in baseball history. On April 25, 1976, while playing center field at Dodger Stadium, Monday noticed that a father and son had jumped the center field wall and were attempting to set fire to an American flag. As the protesters attempted to set it ablaze, Monday grabbed it from their clutches and ran it over to the safety of the Dodgers bullpen. Afterwards, Monday was quoted as saying, "If you're going to burn the flag, don't do it around me. I've been to too many veterans' hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it." Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 32.3 ounces. Full LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA (for the bat only). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA (for the signature only). The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
