Description

Bring "Sweet Lou" Piniella into your fold with this signed 1971 Kansas City Royals game-used jersey. After trading places a whole bunch as a minor leaguer during the 1960s, Piniella settled in with the first-year Kansas City Royals in 1969. Piniella started off his Major League career with a bang, batting .282 and winning the 1969 American League Rookie of the Year award. Over his sweet-swinging 18-season MLB career, he batted a productive .291 lifetime and then went on to an even longer 25-year career as a winning manager. Piniella has twice come up just a single vote shy of Hall of Fame enshrinement and his many accomplishments, topped by three World Series championships, may get him there yet.

The offered jersey is described as a blue mist road example from the Royals' third season of play. Sewn inside the collar is a label embroidered with "71 Set 1," indicating the season and uniform set number. Piniella has signed firmly below this label. Patches include a round Royals logo on the left sleeve, Kansas City lettering on the front, and number 9 on the back. The collar and sleeves are trimmed in blue, and a Wilson size 42 factory label is sewn on the left-front tail. Wear is moderate, and overall this vintage gamer presents handsomely.

Phil Wood LOA for game use.

Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA for the signature.
