Lot # 38: Exceedingly Rare 1947 Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers Pennant

Items related to Jackie Robinson from his rookie season are always highly prized by collectors. This 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers full-size pennant featuring the team's game-changing rookie star Jackie Robinson is no exception. During his rookie season, as the first Black player to cross baseball's notorious color line, Robinson manned the first base position for Brooklyn. A version of this pennant exists with the caption: "Jackie Robinson 1st Baseman." The differences between that rare pennant version and the exceedingly rare example offered here is this one does not have the 1st Baseman tag. What it does have is a batting pose appliqué of Robinson, with his name spelled out on the jersey, and a letter B on the cap. The rest of the layout includes Brooklyn Dodgers white lettering against a Dodger blue background and a gold accent strip at the wide end. Research has found 10 or so known examples of the pennant with 1st Baseman, in a variety of color formats. Only one other example of this 1947 pennant without 1st Baseman has been found. The tassels are nearly full, with just one of the four strands suffering partial loss. The point is fairly sharp, and typical pinholes are noted at the endpoints. The graphics are solid, with just a few very small cracks on the jersey, and the background is moderately faded. These conditions add up to Vg+ rating for this super-tough pennant, from one baseball's most historic seasons.
