Description

Fred Tenney was a transformative player in the early days of baseball. He was credited with originating the "3-6-3" double play., playing for the Boston Beaneaters/Doves/Rustlers and the New York Giants, spending almost 20 years as a player and manager from 1894 to 1911. This collection from his family archive includes mostly items from that time and mostly preserved in Excellent or better condition. There are some lesser and some with newspaper clippings pasted on the pages.

 

Fred Tenney signed letter on Sporting News letterhead - undated with a (“9-10”) signature giving permission to reproduce his autograph in the Baseball Register. Grades VG with small tears at top and bottom. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.

Wallace Goldsmith original artwork (renowned artist based in Boston), Three pieces of artwork attached to an 11 ½ x 8 cardboard backing. Featuring his fine line work as well as one piece with extensive Zipper-a-Tone shading. Two of them feature cartoons about the Boston Americans who played in the very first World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903. The other features Fred Tenney of the Boston Beaneaters (EX).

1908 New York NL composite mini-cabinet (folk art/fantasy piece) featuring Fred Tenney, Mathewson, Bresnahan and McGinnity (EX) pasted on 5x5 cardboard (VG).

1894 Brown Daily Herald "Class Day" publication missing back cover.

(80+) mostly 1890s-1910s (some newer) publications/full pages featuring baseball scenes (Leslie's, Sporting News, Sporting Life, Boston Sunday Journal, Harpers, Colliers, This Week, Liberty, etc.) highlighted by photos and articles that include Cobb, Chance, Mathewson, M. Brown, Cy Young, Wagner, Lajoie and many more. Mostly newspaper size, as well as a few dozen additional clippings/second generation postcards/etc., this one-of-a-kind archive from over a century ago may not be seen again for another 100 years!
