Description

Presented is a scarce 1939 Philadelphia Phillies home jersey designed as a salesman's sample, identical to the flannels worn by Major Leaguers. The offered jersey is, at first glance, virtually identical to a game-used specimen worn on the fields of play during the late 1930s. Measuring size 38-40 (despite a tagged size of 34), this Spalding Sporting Goods shirt features a navy and red trim on the collar, down the front, and on the sleeves. The team logo, as well as the numeral 30 on the reverse, are styled in the same manner. Each of the appliqued felts are in exceptional condition, as are the seven buttons on the jersey front. The left sleeve features a Baseball Centennial patch, helping to date it to the 1939 season. The inside jersey collar features manufacturer and size tagging along with "Dry Clean Only" instructions and another, faded tag that under magnification helps identify this as a salesman's sample jersey. All elements of this jersey remain in outstanding "like-new" condition, attesting to its incredible preservation over time. While it was not game-used, it is a high-quality piece in the same style as players' jerseys and offers an outstanding opportunity to acquire this rare style in top condition as a relatively affordable alternative to Major League examples. LOA from Phil Wood.
