Description

Presentable figural trophy commemorating the 1919 Union League Championship won by Thompson's Point. While we do not know the exact geographical origin of this piece (there are multiple Thompson's Points that we have encountered in our research, including ones in Maine and New Jersey), we do know that it very likely represents an amateur league common during this era, which usually pitted rival towns or workmen's groups against each other. The trophy, which sits atop a 4-1/2 inch base measures 14-1/2 inches tall, includes a 4-inch figure of a baseball player at top. The cup of the trophy measures 9-1/2 inches at its widest point. Plated in silver, the trophy features embossed lettering attesting to its purpose as well as a D&M Sporting Goods (Draper & Maynard) emblem. The trophy displays moderate to heavy tarnishing as well as a few areas of imperfections on the face in the area of the lettering. It remains an outstanding figural representation of early organized baseball. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
