This “1914 Washington Base Ball Club Official Scorecard” with Hall of Fame manager Clark Griffith, “The Man Who Put Washington on the Baseball Map,” on the cover, is from a game played Friday, May 8th, 1914, with 3,254 in attendance at Washington’s Griffith Stadium which ended in a 9 to 9 tie. The 7x10 program is in Good to Very Good condition with fold in the middle that doesn't crease, and a small spine separation on the cover page layer.
Walter Johnson’s photo is featured on the inside front cover in an ad for a motor sales company. Ads for cigars, liquor, electric cars and even a “reliable horse and mule exchange” are found surrounding the photos in the program, all a charming reminder of the time period. The ads also surround panoramic photos of the Washington team, photos of Al Spalding and A.J. Spalding, a large photo of Walter Johnson, and one of Chick Gandil, of “Black Sox” notoriety. The two next to last pages feature rosters of pitchers and catchers from Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Boston, Cleveland, New York and Philadelphia. The center scorecard pages have been scored in pencil, somewhat incompletely, with the lineup for the Washington Nationals featuring Chick Gandil and Walter Johnson, and the lineup for the Athletics including Eddie Collins, Home Run Baker, Eddie Plank and Herb Pennock.
