Panoramic photograph of the National League Champion New York Giants taken at the Polo Grounds in 1913. The photo captures 29 members of the club in a classic team pose, including Jim Thorpe, Christy Mathewson, John McGraw (Mgr.), Wilbert Robinson (coach), Rube Marquard, Hooks Wiltse, Chief Meyers, and Fred Merkle. The caption along the base reads "New York 'Giants' 1913." Each player has been identified in print along the base. The photographer's copyright "Pach Bros., N. Y.," appears in the lower-right corner. The Giants captured their third consecutive pennant in 1913, but, like the two previous years, they once again fell victim to their American League rivals in the World Series. 1913 also marked Jim Thorpe's first Major League season. A gold-medal winner in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Sweden, Thorpe returned home and began a professional baseball career that lasted six seasons. He appeared in just nineteen games with the Giants during his inaugural season, finishing the year with a home run, two RBI, and a .143 batting average. The piece, which measures 21 x 9 inches, is printed on paper stock, shows light wear along the edges and four vertical folds. It is otherwise bright and clean. The reverse is heavily toned. This is an outstanding piece with several notable names from this classic 1910-era New York Giants team. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
