Discover period reports for major baseball happenings, with this trio of 1920s newspapers. These antique sports reports cover courtroom proceedings for three prominent Chicago “Black Sox” players who were involved in the 1919 World Series scandal, and Babe Ruth’s record-setting 60th home run of the 1927 season. While the edges of these ancient periodicals are considerably frayed, and the paper has toned to dark tan shades, the text and illustrations remain distinct, and the content is fascinating.
Featured are:
7/20/1921 Nashville Tennessean with an article captioned “Scandal in a Scandal Comes at Crook Trial”. This article reports a claim by AL President Ban Johnson, that he had proof that gambler Arnold Rothstein paid $10,000 for the grand jury confessions of Eddie Cicotte, Joe Jackson, and Claude Williams, along with immunity waivers, and other documents that were missing. Also covered are the claims by the ballplayers that they had immunity deals for confessions regarding payments to throw games.
10/1/1927 New York Evening Post with an article captioned “Zachary Yields Record Breaking Blow of Bambino”, written by reporter Fred Lieb. This report details Ruth’s 60th home run of the 1927 season, breaking his own record of 59 homers, which he set in 1921. Also seen on this page is a preview of the 1927 World Series, by the same journalist.
10/1/1927 New York Evening Post with an illustration of Babe Ruth, accompanied by the caption “Babe Ruth put his sixtieth of the year out of the playing space yesterday to set a new baseball record", another reference to Ruth's record-setting blast.
