Lot # 1749: 1930s Keystone View Co. Boxing Stereoview Pair with Jack Sharkey & Max Schmeling

You'll be seeing double, intentionally, when you take a look at this pair of 1930s Keystone View Co. boxing stereoview slides. Formatted with twin photograph images, these antique cards depict heavyweight boxing champions Max Schmeling and Jack Sharkey. These famous prizefighters faced each other in the ring for the heavyweight title on June 12, 1930 at Yankee Stadium, and on June 21, 1932 at the Madison Square Garden Bowl. Schmeling won the first fight, to claim the vacant NYSAC, NBA (WBA) and Ring titles, and Sharkey won them from him in their second meeting. The caption on the Schmeling slide names him "World's Heavyweight Champion", while Sharkey is identified as "Contestant for World's Heavyweight Championship". These identifications date these slides to 1930-1932, sometime between their two championship bouts. Formatted after cabinet cards, with photographs adhered to heavy stock backers, these impressive slides report as clean, solid and attractive examples, with minor wear, though the Sharkey slide has been clipped at the upper corners.
