Recall a grand old baseball palace, with the viewing of this Polo Grounds stadium seat. The original Polo Grounds stadium was built in 1879, and the New York Giants began playing there in 1883. The Giants moved into Polo Grounds II in 1889 and then Polo Grounds III in 1891. A 1911 fire saw the venue rebuilt, and the Giants continued to play there through the 1957 season, after which the team relocated to San Francisco. From 1911-1954, the Giants hosted the World Series in thirteen seasons, so this vintage seat saw plenty of big game action. For three consecutive seasons from 1921-1923, the Giants faced rival stadium tenants, the New York Yankees and their star slugger Babe Ruth. A truly memorable moment came in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, when the great Willie Mays made a spectacular play known as “The Catch”.
Repainted in early Giants colors of orange, black and olive green, this seat was designed to finish the left end of a row, as evidenced by the left side iron armrest end piece, which bears the interlocked letters “NY” as the central part of the design. The right side armrest is fitted with protruding connector hoops, enabling linking to the next seat in the row. The fold up seat section is constructed with five slats, and the ladderback section has three slats. Stenciled on the top slat, is the number “24”, in honor of Mays. A brass plate has been attached to the middle back slat. This plate is engraved with “Genuine Box Seat from the Polo Grounds, Coogan’s Bluff, New York, Home of the New York Giants 1911-1957, New York Yankees 1913-1922, New York Mets 1962-1963”. Blessed with tremendous display appeal, this seat has been fitted with a heavy duty iron base for freestanding presentation.
