Description

Reds rooters grab a piece of ancient baseball history, with the acquisition of this Crosley Field stadium end seat. The right side armrest of this vintage seat is adorned with the classic Cincinnati Reds logo facing out, with Reds spelled out inside a larger letter C. The inner side of this armrest is marked 0-2357 in raised numerals. As this seat was made to finish off a row at the right end, it is a rare example of those constructed with the Reds logo, which are dwarfed by the number of stadium seats without logos.

Beginning in 1909, steel and concrete MLB stadiums were built, to replace wood structures that were often subject to catching fire. Along with Shibe Park, Forbes Field, Wrigley, Stadium, Fenway Park and others, Crosley was one of the new stadiums erected during the period 1909-1923. Most of the stadiums from this era were replaced circa 1971, including Crosley Field, which opened on April 11, 1912, and closed on June 24, 1970, in favor of the new Riverfront Stadium, with nearly double the capacity. The first MLB stadium outfitted with lights for night games, Crosley was also one of the smallest MLB ballparks, with capacity ranging between 20,000 and 30,000 throughout its six decades of use.

Attached to a wood base for freestanding display, this weathered seat shows considerable signs of authentic use/wear. Still, it remains fairly sturdy and very attractive. The left end if fitted with mounting hoops on the iron armrest, to enable to connection to the adjacent seat. The wood slat fold-up seat section functions smoothly, the ladderback section is solid, all bolts are tight, paint wear is moderate and oxidation on the armrests is also moderate.
