Lot # 1621: 1981 Frank Howard Game-Used San Diego Home Jersey & Pants - Phil Wood LOA

Go big for this 1981 Frank Howard game-used San Diego Padres home jersey and pants set. A tower of power for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Senators throughout the 1960s, Howard had several colorful nicknames, including the "Washington Monument". His 6'7" height is reflected by this uniform ensemble, which measures 83" from top to bottom, with a 38" jersey height and a 45" pants height. Howard was a dedicated baseball lifer, whose professional career as a player, manager and coach spanned forty-plus years. Hired as manager by the San Diego Padres in 1981, Howard presided over a shortened season split into two halves by a strike. In all, the Padres played 110 games in 1981, half of them at home. It was customary for team members to have two home uniforms, so it is likely Howard wore the uniform offered here in no more than 30 of the Padres home games. Condition of these handsome garments reflects the degree of use. There are scattered stains and spots of soiling, mainly on the jersey back and to a lesser degree on the front of the pants, though the white material remains bright, and the brown, orange and gold patches and accent stripes are vibrant. Howard's number 33 is seen on the back of the jersey, along with his nameplate, and the front is adorned with mod style Padres lettering. A Wilson factory label inside the collar is embroidered with the size 52, and a label on the front-left tail in embroidered with the numbers 33 and 81, for uniform number and year. Located inside the waistband of the pants, are a Wilson size 42 factory label, and an identifier label embroidered with the numbers 33, 81 and 32, for uniform number, year and inseam measurement.
