Multiple prized signatures are found on the offered 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers team-signed baseball. It was a fight to the finish in the 1950 National League pennant race, with the Dodgers missing out on a trip to the World Series due to a loss to the "Whiz Kids" from Philadelphia, in the final game of the season. Hats off to the Phillies youth movement, as this Dodgers lineup was stacked with Hall of Famers and stars, top to bottom.
While the factory labeling stamps are well-worn, a ghost of the Spalding logo remains visible, suggesting this period-signed baseball is an ONL/Frick model. A total of (27) signatures of middle to lesser quality are counted, including three Hall of Famers, and five clubhouse examples, as noted below. Favorably, the signatures of headliners Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella, Carl Furillo and Don Newcombe are readily identifiable.
Featured signers are:
Sweet spot: Burt Shotten (manager, clubhouse example);
North panel: Rex Barney (clubhouse), Erv Palica (d.1982), "Preacher" Roe, Jackie Robinson (HOF, d.1972), Ralph Branca, Gene Hermanski;
South panel: Dan Bankhead (d.1976), Billy Loes, Al Epperly, Clyde Sukeforth (coach), Cal Abrams, Eddie Miksis, Gil Hodges (HOF, d.1972), Jake Pitler (coach, d.1968);
East Panel: Joe Hatten (d.1988), Jim Russell (d.1987), Bobby Morgan, undetermined;
West panel: Don Newcombe, "Duke" Snider (clubhouse), "Pee Wee" Reese (clubhouse), Carl Furllio (d.1989), Wayne Belardi, Roy Campanella (HOF, d.1993), Bruce Edwards (d.1975), Billy Cox (d.1978).
