Description

A clever composition and considerable scarcity mark this 1911 New York Highlanders team photograph a great find. Visible in a 15-1/2” x 12” window, this oversized photo is professionally framed with octagon matting, to overall dimensions of 22” x 18”. The Highlanders players are positioned in such a fashion, as to spell out “N.Y.”, with player-manager Hal Chase and coach “Duke” Farrell serving as the periods. Signed and inscribed “N.Y. Am. BB Club, Copyright by F.J. Ball 1911” at bottom-left, this antique photograph appears to be an original Type I print, with sharp player images. Some of the notable stars for this middle of the pack team were Hal Chase, “Hippo” Vaughn, Roy Hartzell, Jack Quinn, and Russ Ford. Several creases, moderate soiling, and some surface loss at bottom-right are noted. Despite these conditions, this dynamic photograph remains visually impressive. Two years after this shot was taken, the Highlanders were rechristened the Yankees, and this piece is a fantastic relic of the franchise’s pre-dynasty years.
