MLB expansion was in full swing in the early 1960s, and the Japanese import bobblehead line was growing right along with the game. A healthy part of this souvenir growth spurt arrives, with the presentation of this 1961-1963 square white base bobblehead selection (7). These cheerful icons represent seven different MLB squads, including the 1961-1962 champions New York Yankees, perennial contenders and 1963 champions the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians mascot “Chief Wahoo”, several expansion teams, and the transplanted Kansas City Athletics. Approaching full senior citizen status, these vintage figures are nicely preserved and retain plenty of display appeal.
Featured are:
New York Yankees bobblehead with raise jersey lettering, grooved pinstripes and a “Patent Pending Japan” stamp, is a solid Ex+ example.
Los Angeles Dodgers tough jersey decal variation bobblehead is a very attractive Ex-Mt example and would have rated higher, were it not for moderate wear on the jersey decal. It has been reported that Dodgers bobbleheads from this series with a jersey decal comprise approximately 5% of the run, while the great majority haved raised lettering.
Cleveland Indians somewhat tough mascot bobblehead with raised jersey lettering and “Patent Pending Japan” stamp presents as Nm, with deference to some yellowing on the teeth.
New York Mets tough bobblehead with jersey decal has a detached head, that appears to have been repaired around the opening and the back. Otherwise presents Nm details with deference to significant yellowing on the back of the uniform, which appears to be a factory finish issue.
Washington Senators bobblehead with raised jersey lettering and red foil “Japan” sticker is a very appealing Nm example.
Los Angeles Angels bobblehead with jersey decal and red foil “Japan” sticker is a handsome piece that rates as Ex-Mt due to unobtrusive hairline surface cracks on right shoulder. A nice little design element takes the form of a white halo around the crown of the cap.
Kansas City Athletics somewhat tough bobblehead with jersey decal and “Patent Pending Japan” stamp is a very attractive Ex-Mt+ example, that would have rated high if not for a few barely perceptible hairline cracks on the flesh area of the back of the head.
