Lot # 1249: Extremely Rare 1938 Bill Baker American Association Satin All-Star Jersey & Pants

Extremely rare American Association All-Star game uniform consisting of jersey and pants attributed to catcher and outfielder Bill Baker. What makes this uniform so special is that is a rare satin variety, which was experimented with by the American Association All-Stars in 1938 and carried into a select number of Major League clubs on a trial basis during the early 1940s. We have seen only one other satin jersey from this All-Star game come to market in more than twenty years, and this is the first of its kind that we have ever handled! The red, white, and blue jersey is visually stunning at first glance. It features a white body with red sleeves and trim finished with a blue felt logo on the left chest consisting of a five-point star and "A A" flanking each side of the top point. The blue felt number "14" is on the jersey reverse. Black buttons down the front complete the top. A Wilson Sports Equipment tag is present in the collar along with a size 44 tag and a typewritten tag noting the size and the player (B. Baker) to whom it belonged. The dark blue satin pants form a striking contrast with the jersey, featuring red along the waistline and white striping down the sides. "Bill Baker" is chainstitched in red on the interior waistband. The uniform remains in overall good condition, with wear - more likely from the passage of time than game usage - visible on the jersey. The satin design is prone to fabric pulls and scuffing, with are scattered throughout the top, but do not detract from the overall outstanding display value of this particularly rare style of jersey. This is an exceptional piece of memorabilia that is very rarely encountered!
