Description

Recall one of Commie Mack's great dynasties, with the viewing of this Cook Pottery Co. 1911 Worlds Champions Philadelphia Athletics commemorative plate. This 10" diameter plate is decorated with the faces of owner-manager Mack and his players, cleverly contained within an image of the team's elephant mascot. Prominent players depicted are ace pitchers Eddie Plank, Chief Bender and Jack Coombs; and the $100,000 Infield of Stuffy McInnis, Eddie Collins, Jack Barry and Frank Baker. Considerable all-over crazing and moderate paint wear support the authentic nature of this antique plate, which radiates display appeal.

Before "Moneyball" evolved, the Athletics franchise seesawed between dominant dynasties and dismal cellar dwellers. Charter members of the American League, the A's had a stranglehold on the fledgling league from 1901-1914, wining 6 AL pennants and 3 World Series championships during this span. The 1911 squad finished the regular season with a truly impressive record of 101-50, followed by a 4 games to 2 triumph over the New York Giants in the 1911 World Series.
