Lot # 1343: 1910s Washington Senators American League Park II Box Office Brass Sign Plaque

Gaze in wide wonder at this 1910s Washington Senators American League Park II box office brass sign. Sized at 12” x 9”, this ancient brass sign is mounted on a 1” thick wood plaque measuring 14” x 13”. Washington DC’s original American League Park was built in 1891 and opened under the name National Park, which was changed to American League Park. A 1911 fire led to a quick rebuilding, and the revived stadium was known as American League Park II from 1911 until 1923, when it was rechristened Griffith Stadium, in honor of Senators owner Clark Griffith. This incredible sign is thickly lettered with “Reserved Seats 10¢”. Patinated pitting running in a slight horizontal arc between the embossed lettering, and some long ago touch-ups support the ancient nature of this nostalgic prize, and though weathered, the sign still presents impressively. Located below the antique sign, is a more recent brass plate, engraved with “Original Brass Sign from a Ticket Window at League Park, Washington, D.C. Later Known as Griffith Stadium”.
