Description

Celebrate an historic occasion, with this Doc Werner hand painted 1954 Baltimore Orioles inaugural season baseball. Having just relocated from St. Louis, the Browns were rechristened the Orioles in 1954. A parade through the city streets welcomed fans and players to Memorial Stadium on April 15, 1954, for the Orioles inaugural season home opener. Werner has commemorated this memorable event, with illustrations of Bob Turley and Clint Courtney, who were the pitcher-catcher battery for the Orioles that day, in a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. In addition to depictions of Turley and Courtney, this ancient ball is also adorned with an illustration of the O's Bird mascot, perched atop an Orioles baseball. Werner has dated the offered ball 1954 on a side panel, and he has signed on the sweet spot. A light coating of shellac is evident, and though there are many abrasions seen on all panels, the artwork retains sufficient integrity to remain pleasing, with a great look of period authenticity. In front of a packed house with 46,000 fans in attendance, Turley got the complete game win, and Courtney hit the first home run in Orioles history.
