Lot # 1457: 1950s Gibbs-Connor Exceedingly Rare Milwaukee Braves 25” Porcelain Mascot Point-of-Sale Promotional Statue

Super-size your figure collection with the addition of this exceedingly rare 1950s Gibbs-Connor Milwaukee Braves point-of-sale promotional mascot statue. This towering porcelain behemoth stands 25" tall on an 8" by 8" base. Certainly this colossus would have drawn attention in a retail setting, prompting the purchase of one of his standard-size little brother bank statues, or perhaps a cookie jar or one of the other whimsical creations produced at the Ohio-based G-C factory. Displaying radiant gloss and colors, this majestic mascot statue is decorated with interesting flourishes, including a tomahawk emblem on the jersey front, a device first seen on franchise uniforms in 1946 when the team was located in Boston, and carried on after the move to Milwaukee. Cinching the feathers on top of the head is a gold-painted medallion embossed with "M Braves," leaving no doubt that Milwaukee is the hometown for this commanding icon. Positive factory identification comes from an embossed "GC" logo on the bat held in the statue's right hand. Surface imperfections on top of the base are factory firing flaws rather than wear. There are also hairline cracks on both the right and left sides of the base, with the one on the left extending up onto the shoe a bit. These cracks appear to be stress issues that likely occurred during removal from the mold at the factory. Overall, display appeal is off the charts, with this super-tough statue projecting like-new quality. This is just the second time we have had the opportunity to present this 25" Milwaukee Braves piece, and research did not turn up any other examples, indicating the incredible rarity of this statue type.
