Description

Well, it’s not the “Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” but the gold used to make this south of the border coin almost certainly came from a Mexican mountain range. Served up is a 1930 Mexico 50 Peso gold piece in AU+ condition. Fronted by the Angel of Independence, this hefty gold coin weighs in at 41.67 grams, with a .900 gold composition. The actual gold content is 37.5 grams, as stated on the obverse in Spanish with “37.5 Gr. Oro Puro.” This amounts to 1.2057 ounces of gold, outweighing most large gold coins from other nations by a long shot. Seen below the Angel on the obverse are a pair of volcanoes and the date 1821, signifying the year of Mexican Independence from Spain. Also known as the Centenario, this 50 Peso coin type was first struck in 1921, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Independence.
