Description

Staunch abolitionist, Rutherford B. Hayes was wounded five times in the Civil War and worked his way to the rank of General before coming the 19th President of the United States in 1877.

He has signed this approximately 3 x 4 ¼ cut parchment paper with black fountain pen, a calligraphy-style signature that grades (“8-9”). Below the signature he has notated “Spiegel Grove – Fremont, O(H) - 21 March 1892.” Spiegel Grove was the name of his home in Ohio.
