Description

An NFL murder of sorts is revisited, with the presentation of this 1964 original artwork by Joseph B. Corcoran Jr. While no one was actually killed, one could colloquially say the Baltimore Colts “murdered” the St. Louis Cardinals on October 12, 1964. Corcoran’s original artwork for this game is evidence for the prosecution. Framed to overall dimensions of 25” x 29”, Corcoran’s humorous depiction is a 20” x 24” watercolor on board original creation, that sees a Colts player armed with a double-barrel shotgun, who has just blasted a hole through a Cardinal bird, to the delight of a duck and a couple of fish stationed at bottom-right. A fantastic example of a time when illustrators commonly poked fun at opposing teams for program, newspaper and magazine publication, this vintage piece is prominently captioned with the score “Colts 47, Cards 27”. Corcoran has signed at the bottom-left corner, and this piece presents handsomely with bold colors. The Colts boasted a high-powered offense led by quarterback Johnny Unitas and head coach Don Shula. This 1964 squad finished the season in first place in the Eastern Division with a record of 12-2, which earned them the right to face Jim Brown and the Cleveland Browns in the 1964 NFL championship game. Artist Cocoran, who died in 1968 at the age of 42, is best known for having created illustrations for the Baltimore Sun.
