Space program enthusiasts strike gold, with the discovery of this incredible 1960s Mercury Seven astronauts multi-signed baseball. Four of the original seven astronauts chosen by NASA for the Mercury program have signed this attractive ONL/Giles baseball, including Gus Grissom, who met his fate in a 1967, when a fire erupted in the command module of the Apollo 1 spacecraft. This tragic accident claimed the lives of Grissom and fellow crew members Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee.
Joining Grissom in this signing of this ball, are Alan Shepard, who was the first American to travel into space, Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth, and Wally Schirra, who performed the first space rendezvous, when he brought his Gemini 6A spacecraft within a foot of Gemini 7. Consecrated in the majesty of early manned spaceflight, all (4) of these prized signatures are satisfying period examples.
The accompanying full LOA from PSA/DNA cites the following grades: Overall 8, Autographs 8, Baseball 8.
