From the estate of Charles Francis Adams III, comes this magnificent Herbert Hoover display. A descendent of presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, C.F. Adams III served as United States Secretary of the Navy during the 1929-1933 Hoover administration. Sized at 19-1/2” x 32-1/2” x 2”, this arresting display is a fabulous presentation, with a Hoover signed photograph and engraved naval salute shell.
The gilt frame of this dynamic display is lined with a U.S. Flag. Hoover’s signed portrait is also gilt framed, with nicely coordinated matting, and the shell casing is extensively engraved. A Bachrach photographer’s credit is printed at bottom-right on the photograph. Hoover (d.1964) has accompanied his signature with the dedication “To Charles Francis Adams with Kindest Regards”.
Engraving on the shell reads in full “The First Naval Salute Fired in Honor of the President of the United States Herbert Clark Hoover, at the Review of the United States Fleet, Virginia Capes, May 20, 1930, from His Flag Ship The Salt Lake City. On Which Occasion He was Accompanied by Charles Francis Adams, Secretary of the Navy and Ernest Lee Jahncke, Assistant Secretary of the Navy.”.
Truly a regal piece, this stately presidential display stands as a great find for patriotic political and military collectors.
