Description

In his capacity as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt corresponded with acting American Red Cross vice-chairman Joseph R. Hanlon with this March 25, 1918 typed letter signed. Typed on official Navy Department - Washington letterhead, this letter was sent by Roosevelt in response to a complaint about derogatory statements concerning the Red Cross, made by assistant paymaster Thomas G. Stockhausen, USNRF. Roosevelt states the matter was thoroughly investigated by the Office of Naval Intelligence, and that a report given to Hanlon by the Military Intelligence Section was considerably exaggerated. Roosevelt concludes by declaring Stockhausen and his wife to be trustworthy and patriotic American citizens, and that going forward, neither of them would make any remarks about the Red Cross. Twice folded horizontally, this antique letter displays a great look of period authenticity, with a War Council File stamp, a typed identification number, and written notations at top. Applied by means of a steel-tip fountain pen, Roosevelt's large an in-charge signature remains distinct.
