San Francisco native “Lefty” O’Doul got some well-deserved hometown love, when he was presented with this 1930s appreciation award. With a .349 lifetime batting mark, O’Doul owns one of the highest averages in baseball history. Upon hanging it up as a player after the 1934 season, O’Doul returned home to manage the San Francisco Seals from 1935-1951. His accomplishments were many, including a big boosts to the Pacific Coast League and the Japanese game.
Presented by California state senator Tom Maloney, this award bears an engraved brass plate that declares “Frank “Lefty” Grove, A Great Sportsman and Grand Fellow, and a Real San Franciscan, from Senator Tom Maloney”. Formatted with a 14” x 9” base, this award is topped with three trophy-style batter figures of various designs. Though somewhat weathered from nearly a century of attrition, this antique presentation piece remains appealing, with a fine look of period authenticity.
