The infamous "long count fight" of the September 22, 1927 Jack Dempsey versus Gene Tunney heavyweight championship match comes into play, with the offering of this original Type I news service photograph. This was the second meeting of these boxing legends, with Tunney having taken the crown from Dempsey a year earlier. Following a knockdown, Dempsey was slow going to a neutral corner, giving Tunney extra time on the canvas. Tunney went on to win with a unanimous decision, after 10 hard-fought rounds. A credit stamp for International Newsreel is seen on the reverse side, along with a taped-on caption blurb stating Tunney took a nine count from the referee, though the timekeeper reportedly had it at 14 seconds. Sized at 8" x 10", this vintage photograph shows moderate wear, mainly in the form of surface rippling.
