Tremendous display appeal marks this 1936 Joe Louis versus Max Schmeling Type I news service photograph as a prime target. This 8-1/2" x 6-1/2" photograph was taken at the first of two Louis-Schmeling fights, which was staged at Yankee Stadium on June 19, 1936. A rising star with a 24-0 record at the time, Louis took this fight lightly and was reportedly lax during training. His German counterpart studied diligently and was able to exploit a flaw in the "Brown Bomber's" defense, to score a KO win in the 12th round. This loss was the first of just three defeats suffered by Louis, against his 66 wins. After Louis became the heavyweight champion, he gave Schmeling a shot at the title in 1938 and got revenge with a first round TKO. Despite overall moderate wear, this ninety-year-old photograph remains attractive, with a dynamic in-action scene that presents brightly. Stamped on the back is a credit for International News Photos.
