Description

Historians make a strong play for this 1882 George Wright's New and Improved Pocket Base Ball Score Book. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937, Wright played on the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings first ever professional baseball team, and he is recognized as one of the greatest players of his day. After helping the Boston Red Stockings/Caps win six NA/NL pennants during the 1870s, Wright went into the sporting goods business, and the offered book is one of historic products. This antique hardcover score book is a sturdy survivor showing moderate wear.

Results from multiple games at the professional, college and high school level have been neatly recorded. The games are dated for the period 1882-1886. The single National League contest recorded is dated June 14, 1882, with the third place Boston Red Caps hosting the NL champion Chicago White Stockings. The most prominent players listed in the lineups are Hall of Famers Cap Anson and "King" Kelly. Another noteworthy game is dated June 6, 1883, with Harvard versus Cambridge. Most of the other games entered are high school contests, with the Boston Latin School showing up repeatedly.
