Description

A robust figure during his days of swatting record numbers of home runs in New York Yankees pinstripes, "Babe" Ruth was nearing the end of his life when he signed the offered photograph. Ruth (d.1948) was found to have an inoperable tumor in 1946. After going through what were then new treatments, he showed a marked improvement in mid-1947. It was during this temporary return to vitality that Ruth provided the bold personalized signature located at bottom-left on this classic batting pose photograph. Ruth has accompanied his firm autograph with the date inscription "5-28-47". Moderate signs of age-appropriate wear are seen mainly on the perimeter, along with pinholes at the corners, which could readily be matted over. A truly fine example from Ruth's last period of decent health, this very satisfying signature stands as a big game trophy for advanced autograph collectors.
