An especially gruesome cover fronts this May, 1944 Street & Smith Shadow Comics Vol. 4, #2 issue. One of the greatest characters of the 1930s-1940s Pulp Fiction era, the Shadow made the leap from pulp novels and radio thrillers, to the comic book realm, starring in the 1940s Shadow Comics run. Regarded as one of the key issues for this title, this Vol. 4, #2 edition is famed for its classic severed head cover. Credit for this nightmare-inducing cover goes to artist Charles Coll, who depicted Far East fiends fleeing in terror from the Shadow, who is holding a .45 in one hand, and the blood-dripping noggin in the other. A prime example of the mayhem depicted by comic books during the pre-code period, this Golden Age treasure has scored a 4.0 grade from leading certification service CGC. Label notes are "Walter Gibson story, Al Bare and John Meditz art, Charles Coll cover and art. Classic severed head cover.". To date, CGC has graded just twenty-five examples of this classic comic, and the most recent sale of this issue discovered by our research, took place four years ago.
